A Direct Marketing Association (DMA) advisory board released their "Best Practices for Online Advertising Networks and Affiliate Marketing" report yesterday. The report was put together by a a group of professionals who represent the interactive and mobile marketing community.

The report details standard practises online marketers should employ when considering any form of advertising. These practises include:
  • Obtain Proof that the affiliate network company is in compliance with local, state and federal law.
  • Perform due diligence on prospective advertising partners
  • Insist on a written contract or agreement with advertisers
  • Include in this contract should be specific parameters with regard to placement and content of advertising.
  • Routinely monitor advertisers for compliance to these requirements.
Because a marketer is ultimately responsible for the content and placement of all their promotional advertising, following these recommendations will ensure fair and ethical standing within the internet marketing world.--mo

Categorical Inspiration

A great, everyday resource for article ideas is to look through the categories of the article submission sites. Not only would it solve the problem of the author who creates an article, then struggles to fit it into one of the pre-existing categories, these categories can actually become a source of inspiration.

Categories like "Online Gaming" or "Business Opportunity: SEO Marketing" may not exactly "inspire" but they do give an author some direction as far as what the kind of material submission sites are looking for.

And, yes, this is NOT a new idea-- rather, an old, offline submission concept, re-visited. But when stuck for ideas, one way to "un-stick" yourself is to look through the directories.--mo

SITE-SEEING: REVIEW of
Link Metro

Reciprocal linking has long been considered a viable way to increase ranking by increasing the inbound links to your site. But the tedious process of actually exchanging links has often hampered the most earnest marketers attempts to create quality link exchanges with others. Until now.

Because Link Metro has automated the entire process. From searching out interested, comparable link partners, to contacting them, exchanging the links-- even checking backlins -- has all become a simple one-click process thanks to this site.

Link Metro even includes (in pro memberships) creating an professional, attractive Link Partners page and offers a quick way to organize the links within a directory system. Best of all, Link Metro makes it easy to control the quality of your links, with a simple accept/reject option for each site that places a request with you.

All in all, LinkMetro is one of the best tools for increasing site ranking available online today.--mo

Writing Writing Ad Copy That Sizzles

Ad copy -- the collective term for the content of all types of advertising such as solo ads, adwords, opt-in email marketing, safelists, etc. -- is the single most important factor in successful online marketing. Great ad copy jumps off the page, grabs the viewer and never let's go. It compels the viewer to act, to decide and to make a move. In short, it is the difference between amazing and forgettable sales.

And writing dynamic ad copy is NOT that difficult. It simply requires a clear understanding of the fundamental ingredients needed.

1. Inspiration
Writing great ad copy begins with the excitement of believing in the product itself. When a marketer really believes in its worth, his or her own genuine enthusiasm bubbles over and onto the paper.

2. Heart Vs. Head
One of the first things to understand about advertising is that the average person does not make purshasing decisions based on reason, but on gut response. Oh, they might look for reasons to justify their decision, but the basic decision is an urge, a desire. Even when meeting a need, like food, most people will choose what they want over what they should have.

One critical factor in any compelling ad copy is to find that factor that is the most appealing on a gut level and focus on it. For instance, many of the work-at-home opportunities are simply independent sales positions, similar to being an independent contractor, and very much like running your own business. But what is compelling about that? Most people are afraid to run their own business and just as many do not like the competitiveness nor the instability of sales.

So, instead, the ad-copy for these points out the chief advantages: working in a bathrobe, on your own schedule, which conjure images of comfort and freedom from the usual trappings of conventional work. Others even go so far as to promise no work and a wealthy life style, which is true, for the top earners. This is also true, eventually, of top real estate brokers and car dealership owners. In fact, these are very good comparisons.

3. Balance of Results and Truth
Another key factor for a great ad is to balance potential results against a grain of truth. When only the results are mentioned, the ad-copy seems too good to be true. To say, for instance, "Earn $10K/Month" is not so much untrue but is misleading and is often dismissed as a scam. This is because it appeals to the heart too much and the head is left unappeased. Yet many types of sales positions earn that kind of money, eventually. But it is better to say something like, "Start Today And Begin Earning Money Online," which implies a process-- something the head knew was part of it.

Ad copy should be concise and to the point, since a few well-chosen words can pack a powerful punch. In fact, sometimes less really is more. For instance, "pack a powerful punch" is a stronger statement than, "pack a more powerful punch." Avoiding adjectives, quantifiers and modifiers is a good rule of thumb.

The wording needs to be chosen very carefully, based on the images they conjure. It is not uncommon for a professional marketer to work for days on a single sentence of no more than four or five words. Marketers who use Adwords ads, for instance, often fuss over each nuiance of their phrasing until it is just right.

5. Product Placement
Identifying the product within the ad copy is essential for successful sales. Besides standing out from its competition, it is a statistical fact that most consumers view an ad at least seven times before deciding to purchase. Without any way to distinguish itself, an ad fades quickly from the potential purchasers psyche.

By putting all these elements together, the result is dynamic ad-copy that compels the purchaser to act. It demands attention and is distinctive enough to be memorable.--mo

Am I REAL? Let Me Check...

I can see some of the logic in site verification processes. I mean, sure, there are hackers and scammers out there that just LIVE to write a program that will allow them to automate one process or another. Their programs never do it WELL, but they do it. AND for secure sites, this is more than just a nicety, it's a basic necessity-- secure server or not.

But from the way every other site has decided to include this little script into its profile, I'm beginning to wonder if I really exist. I mean, these programs don't seem to think so-- they keep asking to verify myself. As if I might turn into something UNreal at any moment. Am I the only one who seems to notice how neurotic computers are? They always have to ask the same questions, a million times over. And now, with this verification process, they've got me a little worried.

Maybe I should install a verification script near my bed. Then, before I even get up in the morning, I can be sure I am still a real, living, breathing human being. And if I don't get the code right (which, by the way, is always possible because half of them are outrageously unreadable), I can stay in bed. :) That sounds like a winning idea.

Let face it. Verification Processes have gone way past the stage of being a mere "fad" and headed straight into the realm of BASIC NECESSITY, at least according to the neurosis of the internet. Before long, it will be similar to passwords.

Do you know, I can remember when there WERE no passwords on websites. I mean, I have to think back... but, yes. The only password that existed was to logon to the internet. And that was stored offline. NOW, you cannot go anywhere without offering up a password.

And YET, even WITH passwords, many sites STILL insist on a verification. And this is one reason why the whole issue is a little ridiculous. I mean, I had to login to my account -- whatever that account might be -- so now, explain to me why I have to verify my actions?

I can see it at a site like PingGoat!, because there IS no login. You just input your URLs and click on the send button (which, by the way, I love-- even as I wonder how long it will be until they start requiring email addresses, too.)

Traffic Exchanges: For Hits ALONE, they're worth it

I always knew that traffic exchanges were an easy way to advertise a website. I mean, click-click-click and you're done. But it wasn't until recently when I learned how to optimize my traffic exchanges, that I discovered another, equally valuable advantage to them.

Despite knowing some very successful marketers that, literally, ONLY advertise on traffic exchanges (and make very good money), I had always questioned their value as a marketing tool. But, honey, Now I'm sold!-- Especially after learning how to optimize them AND seeing the difference in hits to my site. Yauwza!

By simply clicking for an hour a day, my site traffic has TRIPLED-- and it keeps climbing. :) Well, since this is the only significant change I've made to my advertising campaigns lately, I KNOW it is due to going to the exchanges. Hmmmm. Does this mean if I join some MORE traffic exchanges, I'll get even MORE hits?

Stay tuned. . . I could become a clicking-fool! (Oh, did I mention it only takes about an hour a day-- with free accounts?)

(Cont'd.)

So, okay. At a site like that a verification IS reasonable.

But for blogs? Or for email I'm sending WITHIN my account? Come ON! Does my email REALLY need what is, essentially, a second password? Does my blog entry REALLY need to be verified?

Oh, I know I'm tilting at windmills, thinking they know I'm me and I'm real. Just as I am fairly certain that, within a year or two, verification processes (will that make them VP's?-- hey, once they have an acronym, you know it's inevitable) will be as ubiquitious as userid's and passwords already are.

From Tracker Mo's Desk

Happy Summer Solstice!

Well, okay. That was yesterday. And for our friends Down-Under, they are only beginning their winters. :-\ (Hey! It's our turn-- you had yours!)

I wanted to talk about the bonus emails that I've been sending to my email subsribers in the last few weeks. These include, tips, tricks and my latest finds -- those that haven't made it to my home page yet -- and my way of thanking you for your patronage.

And I want to assure you that, unless they include any qualifiers, each and every one of the i-tools and programs have been tested for effectiveness and ROI before ever sending to you.

Receiving as much spam as I do, I have never been a fan of email marketing, per se. And these are not meant to be anything of that nature. Since I only send them out occasionally, I would be a pretty pathetic email marketer, if that were my objective.

Rather, they are intended to give you a "sneak peek" at what will be added to my site in the near future. And you deserve it, for your loyal patronage. Thank you!
